Cupid
I remember when Cupid premiered on ABC. I don’t remember what I thought of it, except that I watched every single episode until it was canceled. This was pre-TiVo (you know, back when people used VCRs to record shows), so I wasn’t able to go back and watch them over and over again, but I probably would have.
Jeremy Piven is brilliant. Paula Marshall is hot (especially when she wears glasses towards the end of the pilot episode). And, having just rewatched it, I think the supporting cast was that perfect blend of being able to move the plot along without trying to steal the limelight for themselves. I also recognized some of the actors as going on to other ABC shows soon after (Spin City and Sports Night).
Now that the creator, Rob Thomas (no, not that one, the other Rob Thomas), is a well known name thanks to Veronica Mars, ABC is doing a new version of Cupid. The guy they got to replace Piven, I only know from the few episodes of Will and Grace that I watched. I think he was Will’s cop-boyfriend or something. And the new doc is from the ill-fated Studio 60. Which I find interesting since Josh Charles, of Aaron Sorkin’s other ill-fated show, Sports Night, was in the pilot for the original Cupid.
All three shows were cut in their prime, and I don’t know if the new incarnation of Cupid will last either. More so, I don’t know if I’ll even enjoy it. Luckily, YouTube seems to have many (if not all) of the original episodes. That will have to suffice until the inevitable DVD release.
Since I’ve suspended my Blockbuster Online account, I’ll probably find time to watch them all again. But first, I have some to get some sleep and finish some homework tomorrow.
